Forklift Aisle Width Guide: Practical Tips for Serbian Warehouses

In Serbia, with the rapid growth of e-commerce and the deepening of the "China–Central and Eastern European Countries Cooperation" mechanism, the demand for modern warehousing is surging in cities such as Belgrade, Novi Sad, and southern cities like Niš. Many businesses often realize only after their racks are installed that their stackers struggle to navigate the aisles—either the turning radius is insufficient, or operators are nervous about hitting the racks.

For Serbian warehousing business owners who are expanding their operations, the topic of "how to store more goods within a limited warehouse footprint while maintaining turnover efficiency" has become a frequent discussion point.

So, exactly how much aisle width should be reserved for stackers? Today, drawing on QSLIFT's experience in the Serbian market and insights gained from conversations with numerous local customers, we offer some practical suggestions.

The required aisle width depends on multiple factors: the stacker model, whether the stacker has a forward-moving mast, whether the aisle is one‑way or two‑way, the dimensions of the pallets, and local fire safety regulations in Serbia.

If your warehouse primarily handles EUR pallets (typically 1200x800 mm), the following aisle width references for three common types of equipment are worth keeping in mind:

1. Manual stacker

For start‑up warehousing operations or low‑frequency goods in/out scenarios, manual stackers are a low‑cost option.

For a one‑way aisle, the distance between racks should be **2.0–2.5 meters**. Although 1.8 meters is theoretically possible, it is only suitable for very narrow, light‑load, low‑lift applications. If the aisle is too narrow, it becomes difficult for workers to maneuver, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.

2. Semi‑electric stacker

Currently, a portion of small and medium‑sized warehouses in Serbia use this type of stacker, which features electric lifting but manual pushing. While flexible, such equipment requires sufficient operating space.

We recommend maintaining a one‑way rack aisle width of **2.2–2.6 meters**. This width ensures that when handling fully loaded pallets, workers will not accidentally scrape goods due to obstructed vision or restricted arm movement.

3. Full electric stacker

For businesses with adequate budgets, full electric stackers are often the preferred choice. These machines are heavier, have faster travel speeds, and therefore demand slightly wider aisles. To ensure safe and smooth two‑way traffic (or efficient one‑way operation), we strongly recommend setting the aisle width to **2.3–2.8 meters**.

As a professional engaged in direct sales of logistics equipment in Serbia, I would also like to highlight two local market characteristics:

First, the challenge of retrofitting old warehouses. Many existing warehouses in Serbia date back to the former Yugoslavia era, featuring narrow column spacing and limited ceiling heights. In such cases, blindly pursuing ultra‑narrow aisles (e.g., 1.8 meters) is often impractical. We recommend that businesses select stackers that match the existing building structure.

Second, safety compliance. As Serbia progresses toward EU integration, occupational health and safety regulations are becoming increasingly stringent. Aisle width design is not just about efficiency—it also plays a key role in minimizing the risk of workplace injury claims.

For most one‑way rack aisles, we recommend following a very simple calculation rule:

**Aisle width = width of the stacker (including the load) + safety margin (approximately 0.6 m)**

This 0.6 meters acts as a critical buffer to accommodate operator error and blind spots caused by the load.
